Japanese Garden is named after the many stands of staghorn and elkhorn corals that are found at the south side of Grand Cayman. The south wall is completely different than elsewhere in the Cayman Islands. The beauty of the neatly formed hard corals resembles a pretty bonsai garden and was quickly known as Japanese Gardens. The waves and surge that have been hitting the south shore for millions of years have created a system of tunnels, caves and caverns. Especially in summer, these labyrinths are filled with baitfish such as silversides which attracts tens of tarpon and bar jacks that hunt them. Being one of the best south shore dives it has one drawback and that is its often huge surge that makes it difficult to maintain good buoyancy and is therefore not for all divers.
